Wayne G. Schiess
1939-2003

Wayne Gordon Schiess died Monday, January 13, 2003 at Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Boise, Idaho. He was born in Santa Monica, California, May 18, 1939, to Charles Golden Schiess and Doris Averil Corkum. He spent his youth in Santa Monica and graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1957.
In high school he ran track, competing in the pole vault and the hurdles. He was Yell King of the cheer squad. He also dated Carol Brimley.
From 1959 to 1962 he served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Uruguay. While there he started a youth-basketball league, served as an assistant to the mission president, and became fluent in Spanish. His service there was mentioned by his missionary companion, James M. Dunn, in a conference address carried in the November 1983 Ensign. After he returned to California, he married Carol on June 1, 1962.
He attended Santa Monica City College, where he was on the track team and the cross country team. He also attended Brigham Young University and graduated in 1965 with a degree in Spanish. While in college he taught Spanish to new missionaries at the Language Training Mission and played on the first BYU men’s soccer team.
Wayne and Carol moved to Caldwell, Idaho, in 1966. He taught Spanish and Algebra at Middleton and Caldwell High Schools. In 1968 he was hired to be a computer programmer at Simplot Company; he later became a systems analyst. At the time, he was one of the few people in southwest Idaho to have computer expertise.
In 1977 he left Simplot to form his own company, Data-Quick. It struggled, and Wayne found work at the Idaho Employers Council. He began to write software to administer employee-benefit plans and later formed The Computer Works. That company, and the software Wayne wrote, became key parts of a new company he co-founded in 1982—MS Administrative Services. At his death, Wayne was the co-owner of MS (which stands for Montoya & Schiess), a successful third-party administrator with 19 employees.
Wayne served faithfully in his church in many positions, including bishoprics and high councils. He taught early morning seminary for 14 years. He was a scoutmaster, a Sunday School teacher and, at the time of his death, a volunteer at the Idaho State Correctional Facility. He always did his duty in the church and had a strong commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He loved his family and found no greater joy than in their company. He loved to sing with his family and share a joke or funny story. His wife and children loved him. He spent many happy moments with them.
Wayne is survived by his sister, Kate Cuthbertson, of Phoenix, Arizona.
He leaves his wife of forty years, Carol Schiess.
He is the father of seven children:
